Firebreaks are a simple way to help protect your property from fire. Firebreaks may not stop a major fire, but they can prevent a small blaze growing too large.

Firebreaks are a legal requirement and property owners are required to clear firebreaks by Council / Shire stipulated dates each year and maintain them according to those regulations, usually until the following April.

A Firebreak is a strip of cleared or ploughed land to allow easy access for emergency vehicles during a fire. Firebreaks must extend around the entire perimeter of the land immediately inside the boundary.

Slashing (Block Slashing) can be used as an alternative to Disc Ploughing of firebreaks especially for new sub-divisions due to the presentation and the dust suppression control.

Slashed grass must be removed to prevent it becoming a fire hazard.

Rotary Hoeing can also be used to create firebreaks as long as ground conditions permit.
